Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering at Loughborough University is one of very few that brings together the excitement and challenge of both aeronautical and automotive engineering. Its reputation for excellent teaching and topical research is built on a long and successful history. Automotive engineering started in 1919 and Aeronautical in 1935.

From small beginnings this Department is now housed in a purpose built, £14M facility that includes laboratories, workshops, wind-tunnels, a flight simulator and a technical display area where a recently retired military aircraft takes pride of place.

Transport technology is woven in to our society and culture and will continue to provide some of the greatest challenges in engineering. At the same time transport systems have never faced a bigger challenge to be efficient and clean. Our aim is to equip our students at whatever level of study with the knowledge and skills to solve some of the great issues of the moment and to ensure they contribute throughout their career.

At Loughborough we are famed for our industrial partnerships. We work closely with companies across the world, both on research projects and to provide opportunities for our students to take placements and develop their engineering skills in a real world environment. We encourage our students to take an international perspective.

In the Department we enjoy close working links with Rolls-Royce, Ford Motor Company, BAE Systems, Jaguar Land Rover, Caterpillar, JCB, Airbus, Lotus, Bentley and many others. Our industry links bring benefit to our research and keep us aware of industry developments. Many of our students will take the opportunity of an industrial placement and a large proportion will start their careers with organisations they have got to know while a student.
